United Airlines and Neste Extend Sustainable Aviation Fuel Supply to Three More Airports

United Airlines has broadened its commitment to sustainable aviation by extending its partnership with Neste, a global leader in producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The expansion will see Neste supply SAF to three more major U.S. airports, including George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), and Dulles International Airport (IAD). This move reinforces United’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and accelerate the aviation industry’s transition to greener fuel alternatives.

New Airports Join United’s SAF Network

United Airlines, which has been actively involved in the promotion and adoption of sustainable aviation practices, has expanded its SAF supply to these additional airports as part of its sustainability strategy. As of July 2025, Neste began supplying SAF at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, marking a milestone in the airline’s effort to reduce carbon emissions. The SAF deliveries at IAH are scheduled to continue through October 2025.

In September 2025, the collaboration between United and Neste expanded to include both Newark Liberty and Dulles International airports. SAF deliveries will run through the remainder of the year, with plans to continue in the future. By adding these three major airports to the network, United Airlines is taking a further step toward its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The Importance of SAF in Sustainable Aviation

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a key component in reducing the aviation sector’s environmental impact. SAF is made from renewable sources, such as waste oils, agricultural residues, or non-food-based crops, and can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.

By increasing the use of SAF at more airports, United Airlines is helping to set a new standard for eco-friendly air travel. SAF also plays a crucial role in improving local air quality around airports by reducing the harmful emissions associated with fossil fuels. As more airports adopt SAF, it not only helps the airline meet its sustainability targets but also supports the global goal of lowering carbon emissions in the aviation industry.

United Airlines has been at the forefront of integrating SAF into its operations. Previously, the airline has worked with Neste to provide SAF at other airports, including Chicago O’Hare International and San Francisco International Airport. United’s broader commitment to SAF, seen in this new expansion, is part of its strategic vision to reduce the aviation industry’s reliance on traditional jet fuels.

Benefits for United Airlines and Its Passengers

For United Airlines, expanding SAF usage is not only a step towards sustainability but also a way to address the increasing demand for eco-friendly travel options. Passengers are becoming more conscious of the environmental impact of their travel decisions, and this move by United to provide SAF at more airports signals a commitment to offering greener alternatives.

Brett Hart, President of United Airlines, has emphasized that collaboration is key to accelerating the shift towards SAF. The airline’s partnership with Neste is crucial in making SAF more widely available. Hart also acknowledged the importance of government support, particularly through policies such as SAF tax credits, which have enabled easier access to these sustainable fuel options. United’s use of SAF at its expanded airports will provide more sustainable flight options to passengers, helping the airline meet its carbon reduction goals.

Neste’s Role in Expanding SAF Supply

Neste’s role in providing SAF to United Airlines is critical to the growth of the sustainable aviation fuel industry. Neste has committed to scaling up the production of SAF, with plans to increase its global production capacity. By supplying SAF to key airports in the U.S., Neste is helping pave the way for widespread adoption of sustainable aviation fuel, making it more accessible to a broader range of airlines.

Neste’s SAF is produced from renewable feedstocks, and the company’s extensive network ensures that airlines like United can efficiently access SAF at key airports. The expansion of SAF availability at major hubs like Houston, Newark, and Dulles is a key milestone in the evolution of green aviation, as it signals that SAF is becoming a viable alternative for fueling commercial flights on a larger scale.

The Bigger Picture: A Shift Toward Sustainable Aviation

The aviation industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint as part of the global effort to combat climate change. Aviation accounts for a significant portion of global emissions, and switching to SAF is one of the most effective ways to reduce these emissions without requiring major changes to existing aircraft or airport infrastructure.

United’s partnership with Neste is part of a broader trend in the aviation industry, where many airlines are seeking to integrate SAF into their operations. As governments continue to support the adoption of SAF through tax incentives and regulatory frameworks, the production and distribution of sustainable aviation fuel will continue to grow, making it more affordable and accessible for airlines worldwide.

What’s Next for United Airlines and SAF

Looking ahead, United Airlines plans to further expand its SAF usage across more airports in the coming years. The airline has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050, with SAF playing a pivotal role in meeting these targets. United also aims to increase the percentage of its fleet powered by SAF, helping to lead the way in aviation sustainability.

For passengers, the expansion of SAF at key airports like Houston, Newark, and Dulles ensures that they can travel with a more eco-conscious airline. The move reflects a growing demand for sustainable travel options and shows that airlines are actively responding to the environmental concerns of modern travelers.

Conclusion

The expansion of SAF delivery to three more major U.S. airports is a positive step forward for United Airlines and the aviation industry as a whole. By continuing its partnership with Neste, United is not only advancing its sustainability goals but also helping to set the standard for greener air travel. With SAF reducing emissions and improving local air quality, this initiative represents a crucial part of the aviation industry’s future — one that’s more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
